CMS’ Staff Assists Sunset Park Community Members Apply for DACA

Immigration Operations Manager, Frederik Stefani helps community members file for DACA.

On Saturday, April 26th Immigration Operation Manger, Frederik Stefani and Outreach Assistant, Rebecca Rybaltowski provided eligible candidates in the Sunset Park, Brooklyn community with application assistance for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals Process (DACA). Individuals who have deferred action status can apply for employment authorization and are in the U.S under color law. The Arab American Association of New York hosted this event in Sunset Park High School in communion with The Door, Fifth Avenue Committee and La Union. CMS’ staff provided assistance to many community members as as result reintroduced ourselves to the Sunset Park community.

 

CMS Builds Community and Coalition

Task force meeting

Housing and Immigration Task Force convenes for the first meeting in a series to share resources, to create ideas, and to build a coalition for housing and immigrant rights.

On Thursday April 24th CMS’ Staff Attorney Kenny Minaya and CMS’ Performances Evaluation Coordinator Virginia Thomas attended Queens Borough President Melinda Katz’s joint housing and immigration task force meeting. This was the first meeting in a series that will build coalition amongst organizations in Queens which provides immigrants with social, legal and housing services.

Queens Borough President Melinda Katz welcomed representatives from New York State and New York City agencies and local community organizations of Queens. CMS Joins Fidelis Care Representatives Reach Out to the Ridgewood Community

On Saturday April 12th CMS Outreach Assistant Rebecca Rybaltowski and Intern David Vascones tabled at the grand opening of the new Fidelis Care office in Ridgewood, NY. A longtime partner of CMS’ work Fidelis Care has opened a new location on 1674 Putnam Avenue in Ridgewood, NY. To promote the grand opening of the new office Fidelis Care invited CMS and other local organizations to inform community members about their respective services. Throughout the day community members who stopped by were informed about CMS’ free legal services, free housing clinics and community members received information about their labor rights.

Nearly 100 Legal Permanent Residents Attend CMS’ Citizenship Application Assistance Workshop

On Saturday, April 5th CMS hosted a very successful Citizenship Application Assistance Workshop at Immaculate Conception Parish in Astoria, Queens. Nearly 100 legal permanent residents had their citizenship applications completed with the assistance of CMS staff members  and volunteers.

CMS’ partnership with The New Americans Campaign provides legal permanent residents with the opportunity to access free and much needed citizenship application assistance workshops. In these workshops the citizenship application is demystified with the assistance of some bilingual CMS staff members and volunteers.For many legal permanent residents the process to obtain citizenship can be confusing and complex because of language barriers. This compounded by costly legal fee can put the dream for United States citizenship out of reach. Despite these obstacles, the benefits of having citizenship can enhance the quality of life of individuals and strengthen families’ economic prospects in addition to providing families with stability.
