Brooklyn Public Library brings books and art materials to migrant children separated from their parents

On Wednesday, a dozen people among library staff and volunteers stuffed 300 backpacks with children’s books in Spanish and art supplies to be distributed among children and adolescents placed in the care of organizations in New York. Catholic Migration Services is among the list of organizations advocating for immigrants’ rights and legal services to bring books to minors.

Council Member Condemns White Supremacist Activity in New York City After Anti-Immigration Signs Appear

Posters urging people to report undocumented immigrants sparks outrage in Queens

This week City officials and immigration advocates gathered in Sunnyside, Queens on Tuesday to denounce posters that were put up in the neighborhood urging people to report undocumented immigrants to the federal government. Catholic Migration Services was among one of the groups to say loud and clear: immigrants are welcome here!

De Blasio Administration Allocates $4.1 Million To Provide Legal Assistance For Migrant Children And Separated Families

In an announcement from the Office of the Mayor last week, the DeBlasio Administration confirmed it will allocate $4.1 Million to provide legal assistance for Migrant Children and separated families. The funds will be distributed to a network of legal service providers, including Catholic Migration Services. In response to the Mayor’s renewed commitment to serve migrant children, both unaccompanied minors and separated children in New York City, Sharone Kaufman, Managing Attorney with Catholic Migration Services “…is proud to be part of a city that is committed to fighting for the rights of vulnerable New Yorkers wherever they may come from.”

Catholic Migration Services’ Proposed Tenant Protections Endorsed by New York Times

This week the New York Times Editorial Board endorsed several measures that Catholic Migration Services and Queens tenants have been advocating to Albany legislators.  These proposals would eliminate some of the loopholes in state laws that currently allow landlords to impose significant rent increases that often make rent regulated apartments unaffordable.  Catholic Migration Services has been working closely with tenants and coalition partners to advocate for the critical changes now supported by the Times.  These changes include restricting how landlords can eliminate “preferential rents” and eliminating the incentive to evict tenants (“vacancy bonuses”).

LaGuardia Naturalization Clinic Served 65 Immigrant Clients

LIC clinic helps immigrants apply for citizenship

A Long Island City naturalization workshop at LaGuardia Community College provided free access and services to immigrants seeking U.S. citizenship. With the help of Catholic Migration Services; New York Lawyers for the Public Interest; Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP; Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP; and volunteers from Goldman Sachs over 50 eligible green card holders were assisted through the legal process.

The Immigration Conundrum
