During a recent naturalization workshop at LaGuardia Community College in Queens, Catholic Migration Services and New York Lawyers for the Public Interest teamed up with partners for another successful workshop. This time pro bono attorneys, para legals, and volunteers assisted 65 lawful permanent residents who are now on their way to becoming citizens.

New York leaders continue to offer workshops for neighboring immigrants on the path to citizenship. Catholic Migration Services and New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI) will host the first joint naturalization workshop for eligible green card holders on Saturday, July 28th at LaGuardia Community College.
The July 28th workshop is designed to offer information and guidance to green card holders seeking to become U.S. citizens, according to organizers, who said lawyers and trained volunteers will assist them in filling out naturalization applications and help them understand their legal rights.
In Brooklyn, Eric Adams, Borough President will host his annual Citizenship Drive on Saturday, July 21st at Borough Hall.

Servicios Católicos de Migración junto al New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI por sus siglas en inglés) estan organizando el primer taller de naturalización en el condado de Queens, sábado, 28 de Julio 2018. En anticipación, estan haciendo todo lo posible para mantener la comunidad informado sobre los requisitos y el proceso para obtener la ciudadanía. Si eres un inmigrante con Residencia Legal Permanante o si tiene su tarjeta verde (green card en inglés) necesitará lo siguiente:

- Tarjeta de residencia y todos los pasaportes;
- una copia de la declaración de impuestos más reciente del IRS;
- el certificado de matrimonio o papeles de divorcio (si aplica); y
- los disposiciones judiciales certificadas y disposiciones de la MTA (si aplica).

Since the new administration took office in January 2017, eligible green card holders have expressed an increased demand and interest in becoming U.S. citizens. Catholic Migration Services and New York Lawyers for the Public Interest have teamed up with partnering firms to offer free naturalization clinics. The next clinic is scheduled to be held on Saturday, July 28th at LaGuardia Community College in Queens. Individuals interested are encouraged to call our free and confidential hotline at (212) 225-4400 or text (718) 866-3687 to be pre-screened and determine eligibility.
When: Saturday, July 28, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

On Thursday, June 21, during the 4th Annual Sunset Reception in Brooklyn, Catholic Migration Services honored Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton LLP with the 2018 Public Service Award for outstanding pro bono work to help New York’s immigrants become U.S. citizens.
The firm has offered invaluable support to the naturalization efforts of Catholic Migration Services, providing attorneys, paralegals, volunteers, and interns for naturalization workshops.
“With their support, we have been able to run a hotline on three separate occasions since January 2017. Paralegals, volunteers and interns from Cleary have helped Catholic Migration Services by contacting the hotline callers, completing a very basic preliminary screening for naturalization, and then scheduling prospective candidates for intake at the office of Catholic Migration Services,” said Chloe Moore, Naturalization Coordinator. “This has been a huge help to manage the large outreach that we have done, while freeing up time for the naturalization team. Through their help, we are able to serve more Legal Permanent Residents.”
Thank you for supporting the 4th Annual Sunset Reception. It was a successful event that brought together the New York and Brooklyn law communities to help raise funds to enable Catholic Migration Services to carry out its mission of “welcoming the stranger in our midst.” A great opportunity to mix, mingle, and network with a community dedicated to social justice, we hope you will continue to support our work in underserved immigrant communities in Brooklyn and Queens.

In an effort to raise awareness and speak out against the separation of families at our southern borders, Queens residents peacefully rallied and marched in solidarity of immigrant families while opposing the current administrations policy of separating undocumented children and detaining them in specialized facilities. Organized by City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer (D-Sunnyside), the march started at St. Sebastian’s Roman Catholic Church in Woodside and ended at Noonan Playground in Sunnyside.
Jose Leon, a senior staff attorney with Catholic Migration Services, said he was appalled by the images of children in detention and that the organization he represents will continue fighting for immigrants.

Queens Borough President Melinda Katz, District Attorney Richard Brown, and the Queens Immigration Task Force held their Annual Immigrant Know Your Rights Week Resource Fair and Legal Clinic on Thursday, June 28th at Queens Center Mall. Over 30 organizations and agencies participated in the resource fair and connected Queens immigrants with information for city services, nonprofit organizations and advocacy groups. A free legal clinic provided confidential consultations in areas of immigration, housing, employment, and domestic violence. Attorneys from Catholic Migration Services were available for legal consultations and an outreach team informed New Yorkers about the organization’s legal services.

Queens Borough President Melinda Katz’s Immigration Task Force is organizing a series of free informational “Know Your Rights” workshops and confidential legal clinics for immigrants from June 25 to June 29 and Catholic Migration Services has partnered with with the Borough President to bring these much needed services to the community. Taking part in a resource fair and one-on-one consultations, immigrants are encouraged to attend, seek resources and legal advice on immigration, housing and workers’ rights.
