On Saturday, CMS and the Filipino Apostolate co-hosted a seminar about immigration concerns specific to the Filipino community at Church of the Ascension in Elmhurst, Queens. The seminar provided members of the Filipino Apostolate with information on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) and other immigration topics relevant to the Filipino community.

On Saturday, CMS teamed up with Make the Road New York (MRNY) for a citizenship workshop at MRNY’s offices in Jackson Heights, Queens. Along with counselors and attorneys from Make the Road NY, CMS staff provided legal assistance to people eligible for U.S. citizenship.

Catholic Migration Services partnered with Queens Congregation United for Action (QCUA) for an informational session about Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals at St. Teresa’s Parish in Woodside.
Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, is a limited form of relief that provides protection from deportation and offers legal authorization to work for DREAM Act-eligible youth for a renewable period of two years.

Queen of All Saints Church in Fort Greene/Clinton Hill, Brooklyn hosted its annual Health and Wellness Fair. Catholic Migration Services, along with Fidelis Care, the Kings County District Attorney’s Office, and other organizations were represented at the event to offer their services to the community. As part of Catholic Migration’s continued efforts to reach out to parishes throughout Queens and Brooklyn, CMS’ Health Education Coordinator, Deacon Paul Dorsinville, gave a presentation to approximately 50 community members about CMS’ services and how to access them.

On September 27th, the Bloomberg administration hosted a scoping meeting to inform Queens residents of the economic, environmental and social impact of building a new shopping mall in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. The Queens Housing Coalition (QHC), a union of seven grassroots community organizations including Catholic Migration Services, attended the meeting to share their concerns about the project, part of Mayor Bloomberg’s larger development plan for Willets Point.
