On Tuesday March 25th CMS Staff Attorney, Mariam Magar presented an overview of Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) Program to the senior citizens at the Narrows Senior Center in Brooklyn,NY. Over 60 people participated in this presentation where they learned about the requirements for SCRIE. SCRIE is a program for tenants who are at least 62 years old and rent an apartment that is regulated by the Division of Housing and Community Renewal(DHCR). In order to participate in the program tenants must have a total annual household income of $29,000 or less and pay more that one-third of the household’s total monthly income for rent. Participants were encouraged to contact CMS and schedule an appointment with a housing attorney if they wanted to apply.
