Adams, Brooklyn, Queens leaders offer workshops for immigrants

New York leaders continue to offer workshops for neighboring immigrants on the path to citizenship. Catholic Migration Services and New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI) will host the first joint naturalization workshop for eligible green card holders on Saturday, July 28th at LaGuardia Community College.

The July 28th workshop is designed to offer information and guidance to green card holders seeking to become U.S. citizens, according to organizers, who said lawyers and trained volunteers will assist them in filling out naturalization applications and help them understand their legal rights.

In Brooklyn, Eric Adams, Borough President will host his annual Citizenship Drive on Saturday, July 21st at Borough Hall.

Acude al taller gratis en Nueva York sobre cómo aplicar por la ciudadanía ante USCIS

Servicios Católicos de Migración junto al New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI por sus siglas en inglés) estan organizando el primer taller de naturalización en el condado de Queens, sábado, 28 de Julio 2018. En anticipación, estan haciendo todo lo posible para mantener la comunidad informado sobre los requisitos y el proceso para obtener la ciudadanía.  Si eres un inmigrante con Residencia Legal Permanante o si tiene su tarjeta verde (green card en inglés) necesitará lo siguiente:

Requisitos para el taller de naturalización

  • Tarjeta de residencia y todos los pasaportes;
  • una copia de la declaración de impuestos más reciente del IRS;
  • el certificado de matrimonio o papeles de divorcio (si aplica); y
  • los disposiciones judiciales certificadas y disposiciones de la MTA (si aplica).

Becoming a U.S. citizen: Immigrant New Yorkers reveal why they want to become Americans

Since the new administration took office in January 2017, eligible green card holders have expressed an increased demand and interest in becoming U.S. citizens. Catholic Migration Services and New York Lawyers for the Public Interest have teamed up with partnering firms to offer free naturalization clinics. The next clinic is scheduled to be held on Saturday, July 28th at LaGuardia Community College in Queens. Individuals interested are encouraged to call our free and confidential hotline at (212) 225-4400 or text (718) 866-3687 to be pre-screened and determine eligibility.

Hundreds rally against separation of immigrant children from their families

In an effort to raise awareness and speak out against the separation of families at our southern borders, Queens residents peacefully rallied and marched in solidarity of immigrant families while opposing the current administrations policy of separating undocumented children and detaining them in specialized facilities. Organized by City Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer (D-Sunnyside), the march started at St. Sebastian’s Roman Catholic Church in Woodside and ended at Noonan Playground in Sunnyside.

Jose Leon, a senior staff attorney with Catholic Migration Services, said he was appalled by the images of children in detention and that the organization he represents will continue fighting for immigrants.

Katz announces inaugural Know Your Rights Week campaign

Queens Borough President Melinda Katz’s Immigration Task Force is organizing a series of free informational “Know Your Rights” workshops and confidential legal clinics for immigrants from June 25 to June 29 and Catholic Migration Services has partnered with with the Borough President to bring these much needed services to the community. Taking part in a resource fair and one-on-one consultations, immigrants are encouraged to attend, seek resources and legal advice on immigration, housing and workers’ rights.
