On Sunday January 26th CMS Outreach Assistant Rebecca Rybaltowski and CMS staff spoke to parishioners in St. Barbara parish in Bushwick about the recent increase to New York State minimum wage and the benefits for workers who use CMS’ Linea Laboral to report workplace abuses. Continuing CMS’ outreach to the immigrant community about their rights in the workplace Rebecca Rybaltoski made announcements to the 11:00 a.m. spanish mass and then again during the 1:00 p.m bilingual mass. As pending immigration reform dominates the headlines the nation’s immigration system is undergoing far reaching changes. The roll out of the new N-400 form will add upward of 10 pages of questions to the application. This could further complicate and extend the already arduous path to citizenship. (more…)
On Sunday January 19th, Staff Attorney Alice Davis and CMS staff gave a presentation on workers’ rights in the workplace to the parishioners of Immaculate Conception in Astoria, Queens. After the mass, Alianza Hispana organized a gathering to commemorate Virgen de La Altagracia Day which is celebrated by the Dominican community in recognition of Mary who is regarded as the mother and protector spirit of the Dominican Republic. Parishioners who gathered for the celebration also received a presentation on labor rights and CMS’ Workers’Rights Program from Outreach Assistant Rebecca Rybaltowski. Rebecca emphasized that CMS has great resources and expert counsel for workers who are experiencing abuses in the work place or for workers who are not receiving adequate compensation for their labor. On Sunday January 12th CMS staff began their first week of Linea Laboral outreach to parishes in the Brooklyn Dioceses. Parishioners are primarily being informed about the recent increase to the NYS minimum wage. CMS staff will be presenting information about worker’s rights in the work place. (more…)

On Thursday December 19th CMS Immigration Counselor Marisol Canales and CMS Outreach Assistant Rebecca Rybaltowski spoke on a panel at a town hall meeting focused on labor and immigration issues. The event was held at St. Rita Parish in Brooklyn and it was hosted by Councilman Rafael Espinal’s office and Catholic Charities. Present on the panel were representatives from: Legal Aid Society, The New York State Department of Labor;Occupational Safety and Health Administration; the NYC Police Department and the law firm of Allen Kaye. On Wednesday December 18th Outreach Assistant Rebecca Rybaltowski attended an event on Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals hosted by the Immigrant Movement International: Juventud Ecuadoriana in Corona, Queens. In attendance were FEGS Health and Human Services: Brooklyn Resource Center and the Young Woman Christian Association.
During the event Rebecca spoke about CMS services highlighting our Linea Laboral. Participants were interested in getting information about qualifications to apply for DACA as well as educational opportunities such as ESL and Citize
nship classes.

On Wednesday December 18th CMS and the Queens Housing Coalition gathered at St. Sebastian parish in Woodside,Queens. At the meeting members learned about the Queens Legal Aid Society office and other groups’ desire to get New York City government to take control of NYC’s rent laws.
