CMS Informs Parishioners in Bay Ridge about SCRIE

On Sunday March 16th, Staff Attorney Kenny Minaya presented parishioners at St. Patrick’s Church in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn with information on the Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) Program. 100 people were in attendance as he covered the requirements and the benefits of SCRIE. SCRIE is a program for tenants who are at least 62 years old and who have a total annual household income of   $29,000 or less and pay more than one-third of the household’s total monthly income for rent. After the presentation, Kenny met with people who had questions about SCRIE. He answered questions and provided them with the documents that they would need to apply for SCRIE. Parishioners were encouraged to contact CMS if they wanted assistance with their applications and had further questions about SCRIE. (more…)

CMS Educates Senior Tenants about Accessing SCRIE

mariamOn Tuesday March 25th CMS Staff Attorney, Mariam Magar presented an overview of Senior Citizen Rent Increase Exemption (SCRIE) Program to the senior citizens at the Narrows Senior Center in Brooklyn,NY. Over 60 people participated in this presentation where they learned about the requirements for SCRIE. SCRIE is a program for tenants who are at least 62 years old and rent an apartment that is regulated by the Division of Housing and Community Renewal(DHCR). In order to participate in the program tenants must have a total annual household income of $29,000 or less and pay more that one-third of the household’s total monthly income for rent. Participants were encouraged to contact CMS and schedule an appointment with a housing attorney if they wanted to apply.

CMS Speaks to Parishioners of the Church of the Virgin Mary Melkite

mariam !On Sunday March 16th staff attorney Mariam Magar informed parishioners at the Church of the Virgin Mary Melkite about CMS’ services and different legal practice areas. Over 30 people the majority of whom were Syrians attended the presentation, and were also privy to on site consultations with Mariam. As a result of her outreach efforts there is a notable uptick in the amount of one on one consultations from the Arabic speaking community. Fidelis healthcare and Catholic Charities were present at the presentation in order to inform parishioners of their services.

CMS and its Housing Coalition Partners Informs Members about Taxes and Immigration

Students from St. John’s Law School inform QHC members about adjusting immigration status.

On Wednesday February 26th, CMS and its partner organizations, Woodside on the Move and Centro Hispano Cuzcatalan, gathered at St. Sebastian’s parish in Woodside, Queens for their monthly meeting. During the meeting, members received information about filing their taxes from a representative of Community Tax Aid; students from St. John’s Law School gave a presentation on obtaining citizenship and finally, students from CUNY Law School solicited feedback about a housing related policy proposal.
